I haven't been doing a very good job of handicapping Gulfstream lately, so I thought posting what I came up with for the first five today might help me focus a little and turn things around.
R1 - #5 Copper (8-1) Sports a nice work in preparation for 2nd off the layoff, and although Alvarado drops her back down to $20k she picks up JO which could signal something?
R2 - #5 Rosa's Way (30-1) Half the field has a legitimate shot to win this. I like the #5 because of two things (besides the probable juicy price). She's got arguably the best breeding for a mile of any in here plus she ran competitively in Tampa under the guidance of a "meh" trainer. Now she's back with Angel - who's no Charlie Whittingham, but he can get it done.
R3 - #6 Dr Duke (5-1) The firsters from Brown and Pletcher will take enough at the windows to keep this price more than fair. Bullet on NYE says "I'm going to the front, come and get me."
R4 - #7 Cowtown (3-1) Can regress off last and still win this.
R5 - Torn between the 4 and 5. Barclay Tagg doesn't generally work them fast in the morning, but #5 Blitz to Win owns a couple of impressive bullets. #4 Candy Man Rocket (10-1), on the other hand, gave a good account of himself in debut at 22-1 and now adds Lasix.
Early Pick 5
